Designing for the Small Screen

No, not television. Let me explain.

When I first started in design, we designed for the printed page. Designing for the computer screen was still in its infancy. I remember when the table tag was introduced and almost lost my mind at the level of "control" you could have over a web page. That was the mid-90s.

In 2006, we have many mediums to design for from a traditional computer screen, HD monitors, PDAs, handheld video players and phones. Yes, phone. With the introduction of Verizon Wireless' V CAST, you will now be able to receive broadband content via your wireless phone. These little communication devises have screens that vary in size and aspect ratios. In either case, they are extremely small screens. Designers are and will be creating screens for news, weather, sports scores, and other video and static content.

As a designer, your target media options are becoming almost endless. Do you concentrate on what you have always done? Or try to keep up with the latest gadget that comes out every 6 months to a year? Is Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, and Illustrator all you need to keep up? Will there be specific tools released to develop and design content for mobile media that takes into account all of the various screen ratios and resolutions?

Just some things I have been thinking about.
